Land Your First Accounting JobA Step-by-Step Guide

9/23/2025 - By Jessica Ford

Graduation is right around the corner, and if you're pursuing a degree in accounting, it's time to start planning your next big step: landing that first job. Whether you're dreaming of working for a Big Four firm or a local CPA office, being proactive and intentional can make all the difference. My name is Jessica, a fellow Saltmarshian and recent college graduate, and I wanted to share a quick guide to help you get started.

During my time in college, I initially pursued a major in mathematics because I had always enjoyed working with numbers and solving complex problems. After taking Calc 3 and struggling, then transferring to a new university, I realized I didn’t want to be a teacher, and accounting was the next best thing! That’s when I made the switch—and I haven’t looked back since. At this point, I was a junior and graduation was just around the corner. While the structure, logic, and career potential within the field clicked with me, I knew it was time to build myself into an accounting weapon, and this is how I did that:

Step 1: Optimize Your Accounting Resume and LinkedIn Profile

Your resume should highlight:

  • Relevant coursework (e.g., Audit, Tax, Financial Reporting)
  • Internships or part-time roles
  • Leadership, volunteer experience, or accomplishments
  • CHECK FOR SPELLING AND GRAMMATICAL ERRORS

Also, keep your LinkedIn profile updated and professional, many recruiters check it before reaching out. I sent my resume to several peers for review before sending it to any employers.

Step 2: Research and Shortlist Accounting Firms to Apply To

Research and list out firms you're interested in, including:

  • Big Four (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG)
  • Regional firms
  • Local CPA firms

Note their locations, service lines (audit, tax, advisory), and application deadlines.

Step 3: Network with Accounting Professionals and Firms

I think this is the most important step. This is how I got connected and in contact with firms immediately. Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you, reach out.

  • Attend campus recruiting events and career fairs
  • Join student accounting organizations (like Beta Alpha Psi)
  • Connect with alumni on LinkedIn or via your school’s career center

Step 4: Connect with Accounting Recruiters and Hiring Managers

Most firms have dedicated campus recruiters.

  • Find their contact info on the firm’s careers page or LinkedIn
  • Send a short, professional email introducing yourself and expressing interest
  • Attach your resume and mention any connection to the firm (e.g., info session, alumni)

After attending several recruiting events, I promptly followed up with the firms that piqued my interest. In each email, I included a specific detail about what stood out to me about the firm to demonstrate my genuine interest and knowledge of their unique strengths.

Step 5: Apply Early to Accounting Jobs and Follow Up Effectively

Accounting firms often recruit on a timeline. Don’t delay:

  • Submit applications before deadlines
  • Follow up with a thank-you email after interviews
  • Keep an eye on your email for communication from recruiters

Don’t be afraid to follow up more than once. Consistently expressing interest demonstrates your enthusiasm, professionalism, and commitment to the opportunity. It can help keep you top of mind with recruiters, especially during busy recruiting seasons. Just be sure your messages are polite, concise, and spaced appropriately.

Final Thoughts for Launching Your Accounting Career

Starting your career in accounting is exciting, and taking a few thoughtful steps now can open doors to long-term success. Remember, the recruiting process is not just about firms choosing you; it's also about you finding a place where you'll grow, learn, and feel supported. Be proactive, stay organized, and don’t hesitate to reach out to professionals in the field. Every email you send, connection you make, and application you submit is a step closer to your first opportunity. Stay confident, be yourself, and trust that the right fit is out there for you.
