Graduation is right around the corner, and if you're pursuing a degree in accounting, it's time to start planning your next big step: landing that first job. Whether you're dreaming of working for a Big Four firm or a local CPA office, being proactive and intentional can make all the difference. My name is Jessica, a fellow Saltmarshian and recent college graduate, and I wanted to share a quick guide to help you get started.
During my time in college, I initially pursued a major in mathematics because I had always enjoyed working with numbers and solving complex problems. After taking Calc 3 and struggling, then transferring to a new university, I realized I didn’t want to be a teacher, and accounting was the next best thing! That’s when I made the switch—and I haven’t looked back since. At this point, I was a junior and graduation was just around the corner. While the structure, logic, and career potential within the field clicked with me, I knew it was time to build myself into an accounting weapon, and this is how I did that:
Your resume should highlight:
Also, keep your LinkedIn profile updated and professional, many recruiters check it before reaching out. I sent my resume to several peers for review before sending it to any employers.
Research and list out firms you're interested in, including:
Note their locations, service lines (audit, tax, advisory), and application deadlines.
I think this is the most important step. This is how I got connected and in contact with firms immediately. Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you, reach out.
Most firms have dedicated campus recruiters.
After attending several recruiting events, I promptly followed up with the firms that piqued my interest. In each email, I included a specific detail about what stood out to me about the firm to demonstrate my genuine interest and knowledge of their unique strengths.
Accounting firms often recruit on a timeline. Don’t delay:
Don’t be afraid to follow up more than once. Consistently expressing interest demonstrates your enthusiasm, professionalism, and commitment to the opportunity. It can help keep you top of mind with recruiters, especially during busy recruiting seasons. Just be sure your messages are polite, concise, and spaced appropriately.
Final Thoughts for Launching Your Accounting Career
Starting your career in accounting is exciting, and taking a few thoughtful steps now can open doors to long-term success. Remember, the recruiting process is not just about firms choosing you; it's also about you finding a place where you'll grow, learn, and feel supported. Be proactive, stay organized, and don’t hesitate to reach out to professionals in the field. Every email you send, connection you make, and application you submit is a step closer to your first opportunity. Stay confident, be yourself, and trust that the right fit is out there for you.
